Frederiksberg Palace (June 2025)
During our second day in Copenhagen, my fiancée and I spent part of the time visiting Frederiksberg, a small city in Denmark. At an area of less than 9 squared kilometers and with a population of over 103,000, Frederiksberg is the most-densely populated city in the country. What also makes it distinctive is that it’s located within Copenhagen as a city-enclave, which I found fascinating and interesting to visit as a separate city from the Danish capital!
The two of us took the bus from Copenhagen centre over to Frederiksberg, about a 20-minute ride. Soon, we got off at the nearest stop for the Frederiksberg Palace, a massive estate that dates back to the early 18th century. Originally, it served as the royal family’s summer residence until the mid-19th century, and since then has been used for the Royal Danish Military Academy.
The palace isn’t open to the public (with the exception of some guided tours on the last Saturday of the month), but the gardens are free to wander around. We did just that, spending an hour or so strolling around and taking in the greenery of it all. Visiting in the summer was perfect timing, as the weather was warm and pleasant with everything in full bloom.
Following our stroll, we headed out of the palace into Frederiksberg city center. We stopped by a yarn store for my fiancée before we grabbed lunch at a nearby café. The café was extremely busy by the time we arrived for a relatively-late meal and unfortunately was understaffed. All the same, we waited patiently for our food and they eventually came– my fried fish smørrebrød with rémoulade was okay, but nothing to write home about. It did the trick for satiating my hunger, though!

That concluded our time in Frederiksberg, as we took the metro back into Copenhagen to pack up our luggage, check out of our hotel, and head to the airport for our next adventure. What a lovely glimpse into Frederiksberg! The palace grounds look beautiful, and it sounds like a peaceful way to spend part of your day in Denmark. I enjoyed learning about this unique city within Copenhagen. Looking forward to reading about your next adventure!
