Even though I’m not a huge coffee drinker, I admit that I do appreciate visiting a café whenever I travel. With so many cafés out there, it’s necessary for them to have a theme, perhaps a gimmick, to distinguish themselves and draw prospective clients in. That said, some cafés are gorgeous, with interiors and exteriors that can be quirky, classy, retro, or just plain eclectic. Cafés can be just as much of a point of interest as any other landmark while traveling.

I’d like to share some of my favorite cafés I’ve been to during my travels. Not only were they gorgeous, but they also served some incredible drinks outside of your typical cup of Joe, like hot chocolate or lattes. These top five cafés only scratch the surface of places I’ve seen, and I hope to visit more cafés elsewhere, to order a drink to savor the ambiance with. Cheers!

    1. The van Gogh café is gimmicky and the drinks were expensive, so you didn’t completely miss out. There are thousands of cafés in LA, all with picturesque designs; I hope you can return to check some out!

  1. Sorry I didn’t get to see the one in Bucharest and in Bilboa when I was there. Both look so charming! I regularly met friends at a couple of historic and elegant cafes in Prague, Kaverna Slavia and Kaverna Lucerna.

  2. I’m not really a big fan of cafés, they’re too often a sweet invitation to sit still when there’s always so much to see around. If I have to stop for refueling, I’d rather choose a café for its tranquility than for its fame. In terms of decoration, I’ve always admired the attention to detail of the traditional Irish pub.

  3. I love the tiles in the café in Spain. The one in Argentina has a beautiful name! 😉 I went to a laundromat café in San Francisco once – not so pretty, but it was unique and memorable!

  4. These are all beautiful cafes, Rebecca. There’s something to be said about those particularly special cafes around the world, that possess a perfect balance between charm and authenticity. The experience of enjoying a cappuccino (in a proper glass mug versus a Styrofoam cup, no less) is worlds apart from the coffee runs we have become so accustomed to. I loved stopping by Caffe Florian while in Venice – it is decorated with art work, panelling and mirrors that make it easy to imagine that you’ve almost stepped back in time to the glory days of Venice’s rich history. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. Yes, I agree! Usually, I get drinks to-go, but there’s also the appeal of stopping in and sitting down to enjoy a cup of coffee in a ceramic mug (especially for some beautiful latte art!). I’ve not gone to Caffe Florian in Venice before, but I hope to return to check it out! Thanks for stopping by, Aiva. 🙂

    1. I’ve never been to Austin, but I’ve heard good things about it, including BBQ, food trucks, and now cafés! It’s great you have a lovely one so close to home; I think every city– big or small– has that one café that brings the community together!
