On the Faroe Islands (June 2025)

I’m Rebecca, an American who has spent time living and working abroad in France. I was a TAPIF assistante in Normandy for two years, and I worked as a lectrice d’anglaisย in the Lyon region for two years following that. I’m now back in my hometown of Los Angeles, where I work for the government.

This blog is my attempt to document my life domestically and overseas, with both my past and present experiences rolled into one. I hope to offer advice for those aspiring to live and work abroad,ย after being inspired by other amazing blogs in the same vein.

In essence, I aim for my blog to combine a variety of things which I love: travel, writing (I wasn’t an English major in college for nothing!), and a bit of poetry. I look forward to sharing my adventures with you, and until then, ร  bientรดt!

    1. Welcome! Nice to meet a fellow Californian. TAPIF is short for “Teaching Assistants Program in France;” you apply for it to teach French students at the collรจge and lycรฉe levels for seven to eight months and it’s a really enriching experience. Unfortunately, the application deadline has passed, but you can try for it starting sometime this month for the following year!

    1. An assistant(e) de langue is a teaching position in France, in which you instruct your native language (English, Spanish, German, etc.) to students from primary to secondary school. I became one by applying to it while still in school; I was accepted, and after graduation, I started the job. I’ve been at it for almost two years, and I do encourage you to do it, if you’re interested!

      4. TAPIF is specifically for North American applicants. However, there are programs in the UK, South Africa, Jamaica, India, Australia, and New Zealand which do the same thing. Doesn’t hurt to do some more digging!

  14. I like penguins and I love France (though I’ve only been to Paris and the Loire)! After just discovering your blog, I look forward to seeing more of your photos and reading about your adventures. I’m American also hoping to move to Europe so that my family and I can become fluent in other languages — not to mention experiencing more of its architecture, regions and cultures. Have fun!!
