Absinthe

There’s a green light tonight on the city crawl,
raw like moonshine under clocks of stars
signaling to come by the dark room,
images of some alchemy cloaked in haze
of a mysterious poetry

To drink, or not to drink:
even the best remedy shudders at first,
icy jaws plunge into the green pond,
no reason to surface at all.

Yes, the green light of this potion,
going wild ((wild)) ((wild))β€”
Leaves and trees swimming on wallpaper,
peeling between teeth of small fairies just out of reach
between pleasure and sin, wings thin like water
coating the mouth.

The green goddess knows how it goes
with each rim upon the greedy poet,
wanting to go higher and ((higher))
away ((away)) ((away)) from
facts of the known mind,

and you want it all, ((want)) the inked snake
on her bicep to curl its fangs
and prepare to strike.

  1. That’s a wonderful poem, dear Rebecca. As I haven’t tried absinthe I can’t tell if you can actually see the green fairy, but I am pretty sure that there could be a ”leaves and trees swimming on wallpaper” moment or two! Thanks for sharing, and have a good day πŸ™‚ Aiva xx

    1. Too many! Charles Bridge and Old Town Square are musts– my personal favorites are visiting the Strahov Library (located inside a monastery) and getting city views from PetΕ™Γn Hill. I hope you have lots of fun in the city; it’s one of my favorites!

  2. I think your poem vividly describes what I can only imagine an absinthe hallucination might be like. 🧚 When I tried it, I didn’t see any green fairies, but I did experience numbness in my tongue (a lot less fun, I’m sure!) Thanks for sharing your poetry, Rebecca!
